Hatsui is the son of two doctors, and even for his young age has a vast wealth of knowledge concerning medicinal plants and remedies. Around the age of 9, his parents died and he was left with the family debt. The bullying and threats caused him to accidentally kill some villagers with his powers, so he went into hiding under the care of Fen. He hides from the world in a self-made iron basket, and finds himself unable to trust anyone. He is sheltered, lacks self-confidence, and easy to push around, but maintains a desire to protect and heal people. With Takiko's encouragement and the energy of the other seishi, he becomes more confident and accepting of his fate.

The nature of his powers is not quite clear. He seems able to control and manipulate iron, and can cause it to manifest out of nowhere. With this ability, he can create a circular case of iron to protect himself (or others). He's also capable of creating needles that shoot out of his body to puncture his attackers. He doesn't do this often, and usually only occurs if he's very distressed.

Takiko has become a sort of older sister or mother figure to him, and he admires her ability to be both kind and strong. He has great respect for her. He treat Rimudo with respect as well, but doesn't quite understand why he doesn't appreciate compliments such as "you're beautiful, too!". He gets picked on by Tomite a bit, in a sibling sort of way and put to do the menial tasks Tomite doesn't want to do. Hatsui seems very comfortable with the quiet Namame, and they've been seen sitting together making little stone statues.

Your name of Hatsui indicates you are a very capable and systematic. You plan ahead, giving careful consideration to detail. Because of your efficiency you attract a great deal of responsibility, and you are inclined to worry excessively and become too involved in details out of proportion to their importance. You resist change until you have examined an idea in detail and all facts fall into place for you.
