He always smiles, and is gentle, but rather serious. He was the doctor to treat Yoshie, and he's distressed by his failure to cure her. In treating Yoshie, he first encounters Takiko, and unbeknownst to Takiko, loves her very much. When he realises that Takiko has contracted tuberculosis from her mother, he wants desperately to cure Takiko, and also asks for her hand in marriage. Takiko initially accepts, but later when he's comforting a crying Takiko, she rejects him, because she loves someone else. He understands this, and cancels the wedding plans to allow her to pursue her other love without a burdened conscience.
