In the book she encounters Takiko and Uruki and they start travelling together. Takiko is the target of the Kutou army's assasins so Mariko and the Seishi help to protect her. The goal of the game is to get Mariko to end up with the character of your choice. There are a variety of endings that play, depending on who you end up with (Uruki, Tomite, Hikitsu, Shigi etc).
